30 Science-Backed Beauty Tips:

Tip 1: Know Your Skin Type

Just like a masterpiece begins with a solid foundation, your skincare journey starts with understanding your skin type. Whether it's oily, dry, combination, or sensitive, this knowledge will enable you to tailor your routine effectively.

 Tip 2: Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable

Think of sunscreen as your shield against the sun's rays. Apply broad-spectrum SPF daily, even on cloudy days. This prevents premature aging and reduces the risk of skin cancer.

I am amazed at how many people tell me they do not wear sunscreen. They don’t have the time or don’t like the feel of sunscreen on their skin.

I’m here to tell you, if you don’t make the time now, your skin will pay for it later. It only takes a few seconds to apply sunscreen. But I get it, if it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind. Here’s my tip: Keep your sunscreen next to your moisturiser (I hope you are using one) this will help to remind you to apply your sunscreen right after your moisturiser.

 Tip 3: Hydration is Key

Your skin thrives on hydration. Stay well-hydrated by drinking water and using a hydrating moisturizer to maintain that healthy glow. Moisturising your skin during the day is essential to protect your skin protected from environmental damage. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and natural moisturising factors will keep your skin soft and supple throughout the day.

Tip 4: Double Cleansing Magic

At the end of the day, treat your skin to double cleansing. The first cleanse removes makeup and SPF, while the second cleanse targets impurities. This ensures a fresh base for your skincare products. You can use one cleanser to do the double cleanse, but if you want to take it to the next level, try a cleansing oil for your makeup removal. I started using cleansing oils about 12 months ago, and my skin is softer, calmer and more radiant.

 Tip 5: Exfoliate Gently

Exfoliation will help to reveal brighter skin. Use a gentle exfoliator 1-2 times a week to remove dead skin cells. Avoid over-exfoliation to keep your skin healthy. My favourite exfoliant to use is a biological peel called Gommage by Sothys, it’s a non-granular peeling paste, with no acids so it's gentle, calming and softening on the skin. With this exfoliator, you can’t over-exfoliate your skin. It’s gentle enough to use around the eyes, which is a bonus for those that have Millia, dark circles under their eyes, pigmentation issues or dry skin with wrinkles.

 Tip 6: Antioxidant-Rich Diet

Nourish your skin from within by enjoying colourful fruits and veggies. These are packed with antioxidants that protect and repair your skin from the inside out. Your skin is a mirror of your daily habits, and this includes what you eat. That healthy glow comes from within, to nourish your skin with nutrient-dense food to support healing, repair, collagen production, eliminating toxins and neutralising free radical damage.

Tip 7: Beauty Sleep is Real

Your skin rejuvenates during sleep. There has been a lot of research done recently on the benefits of sleep including the benefits of keeping the skin healthy, glowing and youthful. Lack of sleep can cause your skin to look dull, slow down wound healing and contribute to premature aging. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality rest to allow your skin to repair and regenerate, unveiling a fresher complexion.

 Tip 8: Stress Management

Stress can wreak havoc on your skin yet people don’t seem to take it seriously. There's a clear scientific link between the hormones of stress and how these impact our entire body including the skin. Stress hormones such as cortisol, trigger inflammation internally which can have a significant impact on the skin. There's a direct link between internal inflammation and skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, pigmentation and even premature ageing. Stress management is an integral part of skin management. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga, or meditation to keep your skin healthy and resilient.

 Tip 9: Clean Makeup Brushes

How long has it been since you cleaned your makeup brushes? Just as you wouldn't use dirty brushes on a canvas, you should keep your makeup brushes clean for your skin. Regular cleaning prevents bacteria buildup and breakouts and helps maintain the quality of your brushes.

 Tip 10: Eye Cream Elegance

Treat your eyes with care. The skin around their eyes is very delicate and usually, the first area where we see the signs of ageing. Be gentle with the skin around your eyes and make sure you use a good moisturiser to protect the skin from the environment. Choose an eye cream with peptides and antioxidants to combat fine lines and puffiness.

 Tip 11: Hydrating Masks

Not many people have a mask in their skincare routine but I tell you this is the one skincare product that will give you that immediate result! As beauty therapists we always finish a facial with a mask. Why? For the beautiful plumping and glowing results! Indulge your skin with hydrating masks that infuse moisture and vitality. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and actives such as vitamin C and antioxidants such as green tea.

Tip 12: Finger Pat, Don't Rub

You really need to be gentle with your skin. Pulling, and tugging on your skin causes stress on the skin that will lead to inflammation, and we've talked about inflammation so we know what this can trigger. When applying skincare products, use gentle tapping motions to avoid stressing your skin. This is especially important when you're applying sunscreen. Did you know if you over rub the Sunscreen you could be breaking the Sunscreen down? You need to smooth it on gently and pat it in to protect your skin form the sun effectively.

 Tip 13: Consistent Routine

Like with everything in life, you want to achieve, consistency is the key. If you are serious about results, maintain a regular skincare routine. Give your products time to work their magic. There's no magic bullet, it's what you do every day that makes a difference.

Tip 14: Gentle Cleansing After Workouts

I've always loved to exercise but recently I've become serious about bodybuilding. Going to the gym 3-4 times a week, I work up a bit of sweat. It's important to cleanse your skin thoroughly after a good workout. And while my metabolism is high, I love to apply actives such as vitamin C, peptides and antioxidants to infuse into the skin to support collagen production and maintain that healthy glow.

 Tip 15: Vitamin C Elixir

Speaking of vitamin C this is probably one of the most useful cosmetic ingredients in Skincare. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for collagen production, wound repair, and rebalancing the acid mantle on your skin to keep it resilient and of course, it helps to target pigmentation and brighten the skin. Support your skin health and protect against environmental damage with a good vitamin C serum.

Tip 16: Healthy Fats for Radiance

Other ingredients to look for that are essential in skincare are fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids from foods like salmon nourish your skin from within, promoting radiance. Fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and help reinforce the barrier keeping your skin soft, supple and moisturised.

 Tip 17: Minimalist Makeup Days

I love days when I don't have to wear makeup. It is one less thing I need to do in the morning and enjoy a relaxing day. Let your skin breathe by opting for minimalist makeup days and embrace your natural beauty!

 Tip 18: Patience with Products

Where is such an instant gratification society, seriously. But just like with your health and fitness, your skin it's time to heal and rejuvenate from previous damage. Results take time. When you are trying new products, allow your skincare products a few weeks to show noticeable improvements. Long-term results come from the daily habits you build in your skincare routine.

 Tip 19: Mindful Makeup Removal

At the end of the day when I remove my makeup it is like I self-care ritual. It is a time to focus on myself and forget about the outside world for a moment. I love using products that have a beautiful aromatic to help me enjoy the experience. I love using products that not only make my skin goal but make me feel good about myself. Be gentle when you are removing makeup to avoid stretching, damaging and stressing your skin. Be kind to yourself.

Tip 20: Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day

Hydrated skin is resilient skin. Sip water regularly to maintain that healthy plumpness. Keep a large bottle of water with you at all times and sip on it throughout the day. If it’s winter and it’s cold, try herbal teas! It’s like drinking flavoured water, and the warmth will soothe you. My favourites are apple tea, green tea, mint tea made from fresh mint, berries tea, lemon and ginger and rosehip tea. What are your favourite herbal teas to drink?

Tip 21: Dynamic Duo: Retinol and SPF

Retinol by night, SPF by day – this dynamic duo fights wrinkles and sun damage. Retinol is a form of vitamin A which is a potent antioxidant and helps to rejuvenate the skin. It is excellent for managing acne as well as premature ageing. Infusing vitamin AGA skin overnight will help to support collagen production and skin repair. During the day you need to use a goos sunscreen to prevent the damaging effects of UV radiation on your skin that can contribute to collagen breakdown, sun damage, premature ageing and skin cancer.

 Tip 22: Facial Massage

I love a good facial massage which is why I enjoy facials. Massage helps to stimulate blood to deliver nutrients to your skin and promote lymphatic flow to help remove toxins from your skin. Massage is a good way to infuse products in your skin because it helps product penetration. I love using facial massage tools such as jade rollers, guasha and microcurrent at home to help stimulate blood flow, the lymphatics and infuse products into the skin.

 Tip 23: Silk Pillowcase Splendor

I'll be honest I've never tried a silk pillowcase but people are telling me that it's transformed their skin. Switching to a silk pillowcase apparently helps to minimize friction and sleep creases. If you know of a good one, DM me on Instagram I'd love to know about it and try it out.

 Tip 24: H2O-Rich Foods

This is an excellent hack to stay hydrated. We have to eat, and why not choose foods that are rich in water. It'll help to keep you feeling fuller for longer as well as hydrate your skin. Munch on water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumbers, grapes, and berries for an extra dose of hydration plus the bonus antioxidants from these whole foods.

Tip 25: Sun Protection Beyond SPF

Sunscreen is an essential part of a good skincare routine but sun protection goes beyond just using sunscreen. Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses and stay in shade where possible for extra sun protection.

 Tip 26: Evening Skincare Sanctuary

Your thoughts and emotions directly impact the health of your skin. Skincare is a good way to help relieve stress and anxiety. Turn your evening skincare routine into a peaceful ritual. Light some candles, put on relaxing music, diffuse a relaxing essential oil and make it your destressing ritual that you enjoy.

Tip 27: Smile with SPF Lip Balm

Did you know the skin on the lips is more delicate than on your face? You don't have any sweat or oil glands on your lips so your lips are more prone to dryness, and you can get UV damage on your lips too which can result in skin cancer. Protect your lips with SPF-infused lip balm to keep your lips soft supple and protected

 Tip 28: Avoid Overdoing It

Keep your skincare routine simple and effective. This is especially important if you have sensitive skin. If you have a complicated skincare routine it's difficult to pin down if there is a product that does not agree with your skin. Keep it simple cleanse, tone, moisturise, and use sunscreen every day, and then you can add serums, masks, and exfoliants to your skincare routine as needed.

Tip 29: Unleashing Your Inner Glow:

Loving your natural features and skin sends a powerful message to your body and mind. This positivity can trigger the release of feel-good hormones, helping you achieve that radiant, healthy glow from within.

Tip 30: Self-Love and Confidence

Embrace your natural beauty with self-love and confidence. By accepting and loving yourself as you are, you're fostering a healthy sense of self-esteem. This inner confidence radiates outward, making you feel more empowered and capable in all aspects of life.
